Probahini is a messenger app-based menstrual health chatbot powered by a conversational AI model. Probahini is being jointly developed by WaterAid and Acme AI Ltd. and is being piloted in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is home to 39 million menstruating women. For adolescents in secondary school, nearly 50% received no lesson on menstrual hygiene from schools. Only 36% of adolescents had heard about menstruation before their first period. 30% of girls miss 2.5 days’ worth of school every month to accommodate for their periods.
Providing menstrual health and hygiene education programmesand campaigns has historically yielded positive results, as evidenced by WaterAid. It serves as a bulwark to period stigma. However, these initiatives are resource-intensive and unscalable. Probahini democratisees this menstrual health and hygiene knowledge, conversationally mirroring a wealth of menstrual health, hygiene, and social stigma resources through a fine-tuned LLM.
